How to Remain Independent as We Age!

In our clinic, we’re fortunate to see many healthy patients who are now reaching their 90s and still living fairly independently. Some remain in their own homes with minimal help from family or friends. Others have chosen independent senior living communities—though these can be costly and often out of reach for those relying solely on Social Security.

So, what advice can we give seniors to help them age well without feeling like they’re slowly fading into the background?

Stay Active
Movement is medicine. Aim for at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week. Walking, swimming, or gentle exercise classes can help keep your body strong and your energy up.

Work on Balance
Good balance prevents falls. Simple exercises—like practicing getting up from a chair without using your hands—can make a big difference.

Eat Well
Make protein a part of every meal to help maintain muscle strength. Include colorful fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to support overall health.

Engage Your Mind
Keep your brain sharp with reading, crossword puzzles, card games, or learning something new. Mental fitness is just as important as physical health.

Stay on Top of Preventive Care
Keep up with recommended screenings, vaccinations, and regular checkups. Early detection is key to treating many health conditions.

Plan Ahead
Talk with a financial planner about future care needs in case you’re unable to remain in your current home. Share your wishes with family, and put important documents like a living will in place.

Aging can bring challenges—especially for those managing multiple health issues—but independence is still very achievable. Staying proactive with your health, leaning on your support network, and making thoughtful plans for the future can help you continue living life on your own terms.
